Bruce Johnson

It is with deep regret that the Lake Community has lost a very important person.  Bruce Johnson passed this past week.  As many will recall Bruce was known as “The Plant Guy”.

He was instrumental in the success of the LGA volunteer group for the vegetation project and the annual full lake survey.  He trained many of our volunteers on plant identification for the survey.  And he surveyed in some years about 20% of the shoreline himself.  It was not unusual to see his small SUV with Kayak on top around the lake to get in the water for something of interest.  His value to the survey was felt in recent years when his health prevented his participation.

The Lake Gaston Weed Control Council offers our sincere sympathies for his wife and family.  We appreciate his family allowing us the time he spent with us.

RIP The Plant Guy

On a personal note, I met Bruce the first time I participated in the June habitant repair project numerous years ago.   To say he was cantankerous is an understatement.   If you enjoyed Mutiny on the Bounty, you would enjoy working with Bruce.  However, his interest and support of the LGA Lake Environment Committee projects and the betterment of Lake Gaston was unwavering.  During our Annual Lake Cleanup Day, Bruce was in his kayak scouring the shoreline of Pea Hill Creek returning multiple times to the drop off area with his kayak full of carelessly discarded trash    That is Bruce I will always remember and miss the most

He always sat in the front row at the LGA monthly meetings and before his health began to fail, was the first to stand up at the conclusion of the meeting to move the now empty chairs to the side wall.

RIP and following seas....
